Changing the Way We Do Dentistry

What is your least favorite thing about the dentist? For a handful of people, it’s the bright lights. For a few more, it’s “the way they peer at you over their green mask.” For a larger number, it’s the look of the sharp tools lying on their sterile tray. But for by far the largest percentage of people, it’s the dental drill—the way it “whirrs” and feel loud as a freight train when inside of your mouth. Even if you’re not amongst the 80% of Americans who are afraid of the dentist, the dental drill is still a thing to be dreaded. So wouldn’t it be nice to do away with it once and for all?

The dental laser, which has been used by dentists for a scattering of reasons since 1995, may do the trick. Better yet, it may even do away with the uncomfortable numbing anesthetic that typically accompanies the drill as well. Now, with the many advancements in dental technology, the dental laser is finally fast enough to remove decay and prepare the tooth for fillings and prepare the tooth for fillings and crowns—jobs typically reserved for the drill. The laser is extremely gentle and painless, and, if possible, even more precise. All we have to do is shine it on your tooth and let the laser emit its high-speed pulsing light and voila—job done!

But removing cavities and preparing fillings isn’t all the laser can do. Now lasers can sterilize infection, remove sores, trim gums, kill bacteria and, best of all, possibly cure tooth sensitivity for good. Yes, not only are lasers on their way to rapidly replacing the dreaded dental drill, but they may make eating ice-cream and drinking coffee (at the same time!) a new trend. Imagine the possibilities…

I not only imagine the possibilities, but I experience them everyday, as we use laser in our practice. We’ve witnessed first hand the good laser can do, and the amazement on patients’ faces when they realize that hey, dentistry isn’t all bad after all! Now, if only we can do something about those green face masks…
