TMJ: What It Is and How It Affects Your Life

Can you imagine living with a jaw pain so severe that you couldn’t chew or bite into anything without a shooting pain going through your head? Or what about living with constant headaches, jaw aches or neck pain? Or how about having your face constantly swollen and inflamed and not knowing why?

Temporomandibular joint syndrome – or TMJ for short – affects millions of people across the U.S. While it doesn’t discriminate on whom it affects, women between the ages of 18 and 44 have increased risk. Unfortunately, many people don’t know that they’re affected with TMJ, and they live with the kind of pain described above. They go from doctor to doctor trying to figure out why they experience constant head, neck and facial pain. They may be given medications to manage the pain, but they’re never provided a cure.

At Lakeshore Family Dentistry, we know how life altering the pain caused by TMJ can be, which is why we’ve studied it and learned how to diagnose and treat it. Not every dentist is qualified to do this, but because we want you to live your best life, we made sure we are.
