Take the Plunge

Imagine jumping in a lake that’s on the verge of freezing over, or in a river whose shoreline is entirely covered in snow. To some, this seems silly, and to many others, just downright dangerous. So why is it that so many communities do this very thing for their own varying reasons? The answer may go unknown, but the motivation behind the event—which has come to be known as “The Polar Bear Plunge”—is clear: It draws a crowd.

The Polar Bear Plunge is a New Year’s Day tradition in Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom; in the northernmost communities of the United States, however, it’s a way to raise money for the Special Olympics. St. Paul Minnesota is one of the many communities that participate in the wild, cold and, admit-ingly invigorating, cause. While your beloved dentists, Dr. Scott Kron and Dr. Jason Ross of Lakeshore Family Dentist don’t actually take the plunge themselves, they do sponsor the event each year.

The next plunge is a year away, but if you’re thinking about participating, you may need that full year to prepare. Learn more about how to get involved, check out what the proceeds go towards and see what other “plunge-ees” have to say, at: http://www.plungemn.org/.

Side note: Dr. Scott does take the plunge on his own. Before he goes through a hole in the ice though, he sits and soaks up the heat of a sauna, waits till his body is steaming, and then jumps in the ice cold water. Why, you ask? It cleanses out the toxins from your body. Ask Dr. Scott about it the next time you’re in our office!
