Use 1 Less Paper Towel Each Day, Save 571,230,000 Pounds Each Year

Going green has never been more important than it is now, and preserving the earth’s natural resources has become the responsibility of everyone, both at work and at home. There are an unlimited amounts of ways that you can transition into a “green machine,” (I apologize – I couldn’t resist the easy rhyme), and while some may demand a few more resources than others, there are so many more that require little to no effort on your part. In fact, one of the simplest ways to reduce waste is to use less paper towels.

Yes, I’m talking about saving the paper towels. I know it might sound silly to you right now, but once you hear the numbers, you may not think it’s so trivial after all.

The Numbers

13,000,000,000 - The amount of paper towels used in the US alone, each year.

1 - The number of paper towels you should use less each day.

571,230,000 - The number of pounds of paper towels we could save if every American used one less paper towel each day.

So, what’s the big deal about paper towels, you wonder? Well, to begin with, once they’re dirty or wet, they become non-recyclable. They don’t contain a whole lot of fiber, which means that when they do degrade, they just degrade into smaller bits of waste, as opposed to becoming a part of the earth’s natural elements, as many paper products do. Furthermore, they become toxic – yes, toxic – when they interact with oils, pet or baby waste, so if you’re thinking of composting them, don’t.

But don’t be too bummed out. Reducing your paper towel waste is easy (as the video below demonstrates). However, be warned: Unless you’re serious about reducing your waste, don’t watch this video, because once you do, you’ll never be able to dry your hands again without thinking of this mantra…
