Tips to Keep Tartar and Plaque Buildup Under Control

Many people think that just because they brush their teeth twice a day and floss at night that they’re exempt from dental cleanings. Unfortunately, while we’re happy to know that you DO follow those basic oral hygiene steps, you still need bi-annual professional cleanings. Why? Because no matter how diligent you are about brushing and flossing, you will never be able to remove the tartar that builds up on your teeth over time.

Tartar is one of the most damaging substances to your teeth. Tartar forms from plaque (calcium deposits)—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth each time you eat or drink something other than water. These bacteria secrete acids that damage tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Plaque can be brushed and flossed away, but only from surface areas; all the little grooves in your teeth, around your fillings and near your gum line can’t be reached with a toothbrush or floss, and it is in these areas that plaque makes its home. When plaque is allowed to settle like this, it mineralizes into tartar and becomes a lot more difficult to remove. Tartar cannot be brushed or flossed away, and WILL lead to severe tooth decay and gum disease if given free reign.

Bi-annual dental cleanings are important for not only making sure that all is right in your mouth, but also for removing that tartar and plaque that would otherwise be left to their own devices. Don’t let pesky bacteria ruin your beautiful teeth—visit your dentist twice a year to maintain a strong, healthy smile.
