9 Things We—and Every Other Dentist—Wants You To Know

We see a lot of misconceptions in dentistry, so I’ve gathered the top nine and decided to address them for you. Here they are:

1.    Dental x-rays don’t cause nearly as much radiation exposure as an hour outside does. And if we DON’T take x-rays, we might miss something very important.

2.    People spend WAY more money on their hair than on their teeth, even though hair is only the 3rdthing people notice about others, while teeth is 2nd.

3.    We generally don’t tell you if you have bad breath, unless you ask us.

4.    Having a smile that looks just like a celebrity is impossible, because you don’t have the same facial structure as them.

5.    To reduce bad bacteria in your mouth—and therefore, reduce cavities—chew 6 pieces of sugarless gum a day.

6.    A tongue piercing almost always leads to chipped front teeth, and many times leads to the need for pieces of the tongue to be cut off.

7.    One of the most surefire ways to tell if your dentist is thorough and uses advanced technology? Check the dates on the magazines in the waiting room.

8.    If your hands were to bleed when you washed them, you’d run to the doctor, right? But in the public’s mind, bleeding gums aren’t a cause for concern. But they should be: Unless you’re brushing really hard, if your gums are bleeding it’s probably a sign of gum disease.

9.    There is no such thing as “soft teeth.” If your teeth are decaying, it’s a result of bad habits, and not genetics.
