Is Your Child’s Oral Health Keeping Them From Developing Fully?

At Lakeshore Family Dentistry, we believe in taking preventative measures to stop tooth decay in its tracks or, if possible, before it even starts. While this has always been a priority of ours, it turns out that preventing tooth decay—especially in young children—is even more important than ever, as a new study suggests that tooth decay may push back growth in children.

In the study, researchers examined the dental decay and the correlation between height and weight in children between the ages of 6 and 8. The results showed that there is a connection between low height/weight and a greater number of cavities. Children with severe tooth decay had a higher chance of being underweight and shorter when compared with their otherwise healthy peers. Secondary factors such as demographics and social values were factored in as well, and they had no bearing on the results—the correlation between tooth decay and stunted growth still existed.

While more research is needed to confirm this study’s findings, it’s enough to know that cavity prevention and oral health needs to be taken more seriously. At Lakeshore Family Dentistry, we’re serious about your oral health, and we want to show you and your loved ones how to best care for your teeth so that you can live up to your full potential.
