Do We Brush Our Teeth TOO Much?

When your mom told you to eat your peas because they were good for you, you ate them. When your teachers told you that you would use math every day for the rest of your life, you believed them. When your parents told you that if you didn’t behave, Santa Claus was going to leave coal in your stocking, you became the poster child. And when your older brother told you that if you ate paper, a tree would grow inside of you, you tried a piece, just to see if it would actually happen. Even when you graduated high school, you thought back to that day and wondered—if only briefly—if it was possible that a tiny sapling was sprouting inside of you.

There are so many things that children take for granted to be true, and though we eventually realize that many of those things (like the tiny tree growing inside of us) were just small white lies told to get us to do something that we otherwise wouldn’t have done, there is one thing that we’ve been told to do since the day we learned to walk, and that we continue to do until the day we die: Brush our teeth.

I don’t know about you, but when my dentist told me that if I didn’t brush my teeth every day my teeth would fall out, I believed him with the same conviction that I did my mom when she said peas were good for me, and with the same faith I had when my teachers said that we’d use math every day for the rest of our lives. And I still believed this to be true until very recently…

As your dentists, it is our job to always do what is best for you, and to provide you with the information that will help you make decisions that are in your best interest. While I still believe that brushing your teeth is critical to your oral and overall health, a recent study has revealed that maybe we’re brushing our teeth too much…Check out this article from Huffington Post to see what I mean: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/suzette-standring/too-much-toothpaste-damag_b_110419.html
